travel tips
travel tips that we found useful on our previous trips to the region:
consistent ID
- the name on your passport MUST match your flight/hotel info.
biodegradable sunblock/suncreen
- required for most water based tourist attractions.
bug repellant
foldable umbrella/emergency rain poncho
- just in case. rain happens.
$1 USD bills
- for tips. not required, but it's a nice gesture for the friendly staff.
insulated mugs
- avoid meleted/warm drinks & frequent trips to the bar.
bring more than 1 pair of swim attire
- putting on damp swim attire is never a pleasant experience.
activities
here you'll find info on some of the activities in the area:
-
Xel-Ha is an ecological park which offers fantastic water activities: snorkeling, tubing (there is a ‘lazy river’ that runs through the park), cliff diving, cave swimming, snuba (a cross between snorkel and scuba diving) and even a dolphin swim experience. You will need an entire day for this adventure as a half day will not allow you to explore it in its entirety.. All snorkel equipment is included in the price of admission so you need not bring more than a towel. The park also offers dining at the open air cafe or drinks at the open air bar. If your purchase the “all-inclusive” package, ALL food and beverages are included with admission. There are showers and lockers for your additional belongings on the premises.
- All-inclusive admission:
- $75.00 at the door
- $67.50 online

Xcaret is an eco- theme park. This one is BIG. In addition to water activities such as snorkeling in the underground rivers, it boasts an aquarium, butterfly pavilion, mushroom farm, and regional wildlife enclosures: deers, jaguars, birds, sea turtles, manatees, etc. You will also see archaelogical vestiges and a replica of a Mayan village. To top it off, this park even has their own beach. Try to stay the entire day, because at night the park is transformed for its “night show”. One of the main attractions of this show is the ancient pre-Hispanic “ball game”.
- online pricing:
- $67.10 (Basic admission)
- $89.10 (Xcaret Plus)**
- **Includes 1 buffet meal, 2 drinks, full snorkel gear, towel, and locker.
- NOTE:
- $147.00 for both Xel-ha (all-inclusive) + Xcaret (Plus).

Though a larger set of ruins lies further south, the ruins at Tulum are an easy half day trip. The ruins at Tulum is known as the “Walled City”. Don’t forget your swimsuit and towel… the beach is amazing. It’s a public beach so there are no lockers. Leave you valuables at the hotel. Be sure to wear a good sunscreen and a hat. The location is only about an hour from Playa del Carmen.
- Pricing:
- There is a small admission fee and also another fee if you use your camcorder.
- Tip:
- Tip: Go early, as it gets VERY hot during the day. Also, busloads of tourists show up after the morning.
